Obituary of Karl Raymond Barnhart
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Karl Raymond Barnhart, born March 6, 1935, who left us on November 3, 2024. A devoted husband, father, and accomplished professional, Karl lived a life marked by service, creativity, and a profound love for family and art.
Karl dedicated nearly 30 years to the Peel Regional Police, rising through the ranks from street patrol to executive leadership. His most notable achievement came during the Mississauga train derailment in 1979, when he managed the largest peacetime evacuation on record. On that fateful night, he oversaw the safe relocation of 250,000 people from their homes amid a dramatic crisis, a testament to his exceptional leadership and commitment to public safety.
After retiring in 1989, Karl embraced his lifelong passion for art, finding immense joy in drawing and painting. He and his beloved wife, Wendy, traveled the world, sharing his artwork across several continents. They spent many winters in a villa on the Yucatan coast, where Karl captured the beauty of Mexico and its people in his studio.
Karl and Wendy shared a deep love for dogs throughout their lives, welcoming many rescued strays into their family. They cherished the companionship of their furry friends, who accompanied them on their travels and brought them immense joy. Even in his later years, Karl found comfort in the close companionship of dogs and always welcomed visiting dogs into his home.
Karl's artistic talent was evident early in his police career, particularly in his role as a detective in the Identification Bureau. He created composite sketches that helped bring justice to countless victims. In retirement, he generously shared his skills through a drawing course called "Over the Artist's Shoulder," inspiring students of all ages and backgrounds to discover their own artistic abilities.
Karl is survived by his three sons, Steven (Kim), David (Sherri), and Michael (Marianne) along with their children, extending his legacy to a cherished and growing family. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
A private celebration of Karl’s life will be held for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the SPCA, a charity close to Karl’s heart.
