Obituary of Mary Ellen Kennelly

KENNELLY, Mary Ellen

Peacefully at Four Counties Hospital in Newbury, Mary Ellen passed away on October 21st 2025 at the age of 87, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s.

Born in Timmins Ontario, she moved to St. Thomas as a teenager, attending St. Joe’s High School, after which she began her nursing training in Chatham, and started her career in nursing back in St. Thomas and ending it in Calgary Alberta.

She is lovingly remembered by her children Lana (Shawn), Bill (Michelle), Jodi, Jan (Greg), Melissa (Ray), her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, cousins, and her sister-in-law Marlene. She is the last surviving member of her family.

Mary Ellen was predeceased by her parents Lenora and Kenneth Kennelly, her husband Bill, son John, granddaughter Ashlie, and her brother Martin.

She was a registered nurse, working at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, Rockyview General Hospital, and Colonel Belcher Hospital. She was a caregiver- always helping, or looking after someone.

She liked to read, watch old movies, talk on the phone to her many friends, play the piano. She was an excellent cook and baker. She would talk to anyone, anywhere.

The family would like to thank her neighbours at Festival Gardens, PSW Joanne, Tanya, and the many others, Julie, the staff at Beattie Manor, Four Counties Hospital, the Elgin Alzheimer’s Society, and OHAH, all of whom offered tremendous amounts of help, support, and advice.

Cremation has taken place, and a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church (20 Morrison Dr, St Thomas), on Wednesday October 29th at 10:00am.

Donations can be made to “The Social” program through the Alzheimer’s Society Southwest Partners-Elgin office.
